The Directorate for European Union adopts annual work plans and reports; plans, organises, coordinates and monitors the activities and tasks related to the accession process of the Republic of North Macedonia to the European Union, the political and institutional relations and cooperation with the European Union; takes care of the implementation of the established foreign-policy views of the Republic of North Macedonia in relation to the European Union; monitors, analyses and informs on the internal development and policies of the European Union, as well as on the development and advancement of regional cooperation; coordinates and cooperates with competent institutions and authorities of the country; provides instructions and guidelines for the mission to the European Union and other representations of the Republic of North Macedonia and monitors their work; cooperates with the Delegation of the European Union and the accredited representations of member-states in the Republic of North Macedonia; participates in the negotiation structures of the Republic of North Macedonia on EU accession negotiations;  chairs the Working Group on Chapter 31 Common Foreign and Security Policy; manages and organises the work of the sectors and departments in its composition; prepares and implements the staff training programme prior to being posted to the representations; evaluates the work of the organisational units and representations under its jurisdiction; performs other duties within its scope of activities.


Sector for Accession to the European Union 

The Sector for Accession to the European Union prepares annual work plans and reports; performs and coordinates the following activities and tasks: preparation and participation of the Republic of North Macedonia in the EU accession process; cooperation with competent institutions and authorities of the country and participation in the preparation and the work of bodies that make up the institutional structure for conducting accession negotiations; cooperation with the institutions and bodies of the European Union and EU member-states within the EU accession process; monitors, analyses and informs on the development of relations between the Republic of North Macedonia and the European Union and works towards the advancement thereof; prepares the participation of the Republic of North Macedonia in the political dialogue with the European Union; monitors and analyses the enlargement policy, the Stabilisation and Association Process, the fulfilment of obligations under the Republic of North Macedonia – European Union contractual relations; including the preparation and participation in the work of the Stabilisation and Association Council between the Republic of North Macedonia and the European Union and other bodies set up by the Stabilisation and Association Agreement; prepares guidelines and instructions for the Mission to the European Union and the representations of the Republic of North Macedonia and monitors their work; cooperates with the Delegation of the European Union and the accredited representations of the EU member-states in the Republic of North Macedonia; organises and evaluates the work of the departments in its composition; performs other duties within its scope of activities. The EU Accession and Negotiations Department and the Department for Bilateral Relations and Cooperation with EU Institutions operate within this Sector.


Sector for European Union Policies

The Sector for European Union Policies prepares annual work plans and reports; performs and coordinates the activities and tasks related to the European Union policies; prepares the participation of the Republic of North Macedonia in the formal and informal political forums between the European Union and the Western Balkans and other political events; monitors, analyses and informs on the internal development of the European Union; monitors, coordinates and implements the activities of the Republic of North Macedonia related to the common foreign and security policy and the European security and defence policy of the European Union, monitors and informs on the role of the European Union in global relations; performs and coordinates matters concerning the participation and representation of the Republic of North Macedonia in the organisations, initiatives and forums of regional cooperation in South-East Europe related to the enlargement policy of the European Union; prepares guidelines and instructions for the Mission to the European Union and the representations of the Republic of North Macedonia and monitors their work; cooperates with the Delegation of the European Union and the accredited representations of EU member-states in the Republic of North Macedonia; organises and evaluates the work of the departments in its composition; performs other duties within its scope of activities. The Common Foreign and Security Policy Department, the Regional Cooperation Department and the EU Policies Department operate within this Sector.
