On 25th July 2014 the Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini paid one-day visit to Republic of Macedonia. She met her host, the Foreign Minister of Republic of Macedonia, Nikola Poposki, before going to the planned meetings with the President of Republic of Macedonia, Gjorge Ivanov, President of Government, Nikola Gruevski and Deputy Prime Minister for Euro-Integrations, Fatmir Besimi.

Foreign Minister Mogherini at the meeting with Foreign Minister Poposki underlined that Italy, the current holder of the EU Presidency for the semester July – December this year, shall continue to be a strong proponent of the enlargement process within the Union. She also sent a message that Macedonia can rely on further active support coming from Italy for commencement of the accession talks.

 

Foreign Minister Poposki welcomed the honest and continuous efforts of Italy for establishing new dynamics in the integration of the Western Balkan’s countries to the EU, and appealed for increased engagement and additional impulse regarding Euro-integration process of Macedonia in the forthcoming period.

At the meeting both parties reaffirmed the excellent bilateral relations between Republic of Macedonia and the Italian Republic – reflection of mutual respect, friendship and close cooperation, not only in mutual relations, but also on regional and multilateral level.

MFAs Poposki and Mogherini beside the political issues, discussed the possibilities for deepening of the economic relations and increase in the trade exchange. They noted the importance for continuation of the Italian development cooperation and project aid in function of the efforts of the Government of Republic of Macedonia. These should serve for further improvement of the degree of fulfilment of European standards in different segments of social life.

During the visit the bilateral agreement for social security between Republic of Macedonia and Republic of Italy was executed.
