The Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Dimitrov participated in the meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Brussels today, which is a preparatory meeting ahead of the December NATO Summit in London.

At the meeting, Minister Dimitrov had the opportunity to outline the importance our country attaches to NATO membership and to present the positions of the Republic of North Macedonia on current issues of unity and security of the transatlantic community. FM Dimitrov underlined our country’s commitment to the issues of crucial importance to the Alliance: equitable distribution of the financial burden, fight against terrorism, NATO’s concepts of deterrence and defence and projecting stability, contributing to international operations, tackling unconventional security threats etc.

Minister Dimitrov voiced satisfaction with the pace and dynamics with which the national procedures for the ratification of the NATO Accession Protocol are being implemented, thus meeting the common expectations of our country and the Allies that we will soon formally become a member of the Alliance. He recalled that the nearly two decades of strong partnership between our country and NATO is a confirmation of our determination and commitment to NATO operations and missions, as well as our adaptation  to NATO’s approach to responding to 360-degree threats.

FM Nikola Dimitrov reaffirmed at the meeting that North Macedonia as a future NATO member state will continue its efforts to develop the national capacities in line with NATO’s common capabilities and in line with the policies and needs of the Alliance. The Minister noted that by joining NATO, North Macedonia will contribute to strengthening the regional security and will demonstrate determination in creating a resilient security environment capable of facing potential challenges both within the region and in the wider transatlantic space.

 

As part of the working visit to Brussels, on the sidelines of the NATO meeting, FM Nikola Dimitrov met with senior Alliance officials as well as several counterparts from NATO member-states: NATO Deputy Secretary General – Mircea Geoana, French FM – Jean-Yves Le Drian, Portugese FM – Augusto Santos Silva, Bulgarian FM – Ekaterina Zakharieva, Greek FM – Nikos Dendias, FM of Luxembourg – Jean Asselborn, Slovenian FM – Miro Cerar, Slovakian FM – Miroslav Lajcak, Czech FM – Tomas Petricek, Danish FM – Jeppe Kofod, Polish FM – Jacek Czaputowicz and Hungarian FM – Peter Szijjarto.

Talks with NATO Deputy Secretary General, Mircea Geoana underlined the Alliance’s readiness at the London Summit to maximise the visibility of the leadership, vision and efforts that North Macedonia has set to meet the NATO strategic goal.

Despite the dominant focus on NATO issues, Minister Nikola Dimitrov took the opportunity at these meetings to secure further support for a positive step forward in terms of our European agenda. The meeting with his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias was also used to prepare and coordinate activities related to the upcoming visit of FM Dendias to Skopje, next Tuesday on 26 November.
