The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikola Dimitrov met today with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Finland, Mr. Pekka Haavisto, during his official visit to the Republic of North Macedonia on 1 and 2 October 2019.

Talks focused on the European perspective of the Republic of North Macedonia, as well as the activities and support of the Republic of Finland under the Finnish Presidency of the European Union, in context of the anticipated decision to start accession talks by the Council of the EU in October 2019. Minister Dimitrov also briefed on the latest political developments in the country, the strengthening of the internal stability and the progress achieved in key reform areas of the European agenda and the remaining challenges, the advancement of the good-neighbourly relations with the entire region as a basis for the country's readiness to start accession talks.

Minister Haavisto reaffirmed Finland's strong support for North Macedonia's enlargement process and its EU-integration path as well as the efforts for a successful outcome concerning our EU aspirations during the Finnish presidency. In addition, he commended the inspirational example demonstrated through the Prespa Agreement and welcomed the progress in the society towards positive democratic changes.

Opinions were also exchanged on the bilateral relations between the two countries and the opportunities for cooperation and Finnish support especially in terms of environmental protection and education.
