On the second day of the Bled Strategic Forum, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Dimitrov took part in the panel titled “Western Balkans – Europeanization, Democratization, Shared Responsibility”, where he noted the need for accelerated European integration of North Macedonia and the region as a common strategic goal.

The Minister spoke of the importance of the European Union and its values for the region, but also of the importance of recognizing and specifically evaluating the obvious results and achievement in the upcoming months. He emphasized that this opportunity must not be missed and that it is the right time for a critical breakthrough. He hinted that time was running out and in this context he suggested that actions are required over words. “After ten years, I repeat after ten recommendations of the European Commission that we are ready to start accession negotiations, with a solution to the unsolvable issue because of which we have lost an entire generation, by reaching an European compromise, the EU should finally make a positive decision”.

 The Minister also had a bilateral meeting today with Jean-Christophe Belliard, the Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs of the EEAS, to discuss all the aspects of making a positive decision to start accession talks with the EU. Both sides reaffirmed the commitment to achieve the goal of mutual interest.

FM Dimitrov: “There is extensive international verification of the positive transformation at home. After the agreement with Greece we expect a positive dynamics that will create a new impetus for us, for the region and for the EU. This is an excellent opportunity to step forward, to succeed at a time when there aren’t many other chances for success.”

At the meeting with the Director General for Political Affairs at the British Foreign Office, Richard Moore, interlocutors exchanged opinions on the ratification process of the Accession Protocol in member states and the prospect of formal membership in the Alliance precisely during the NATO Summit which will be held in London this December which as Dir.Gen Moore stressed is of great importance for the two countries if the successful story of North Macedonia in the context of NATO is completed exactly during the event held in the United Kingdom. Talks also tackled the reform agenda in our country, as well as the vision for a stable and prosperous Western Balkans, based on the rule of law and democratic governance which is also important for British foreign policy.

During the Forum, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Dimitrov also talked briefly with the Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borell, nominated for the post of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Slovenian Prime Minister Marjan Sarec and his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu. In addition he talked with Katja Gersak, the Director of the Centre for European Perspective acting as the co-organizer of the Bled Strategic Forum.

This year’s Forum motto is (Re)sources of (in)stability, while discussions are dedicated to the role of resources/sources in terms of peace and security, sustainable development and economic progress.
