In his address, FM Dimitrov noted the bilateral relations based on shared values and strategic partnership. He stressed the crucial role of his colleagues from the US State Department who for the past 25 years have supported the country and helped overcome the challenges it faced. FM Dimitrov: “There were times when our friends and colleagues form the State Department played a crucial role in assisting us in overcoming obstacles on our path to building a stronger country and society.  We are thankful to the United States for standing by our side throughout all these years. The exhibited photographs around us are still, yet vibrant images of a very dynamic past, filled with important events as proof of a strongly established friendship and cooperation. Many of them bring back personal emotions and memories of working with outstanding American diplomats throughout my career.

In addition, the Minister thanked and acknowledged all those who through their work, personal engagement and dedication have helped put “an important and long-lasting piece in the mosaic of relations and cooperation between the two friendly countries. Of course, there are many more – diplomats, Ambassadors, Ministers, politicians, businessmen, academics, students and friends who we thank today and to whom we pledge to continue to work for the good of the future of our two countries and peoples” – FM Dimitrov said. Ambassador Byrnes thanked Minister Dimitrov and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for co-organizing the event, noting, inter alia, that the quarter of a century of US cooperation and support is proof of the firm commitment to achieving the shared vision of a secure and prosperous state.

Address on the Occasion of Celebration of the 230th Anniversary of the US Department of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Dear Ambassador Byrnes,

Dear fellow Ministers and Former Foreign Ministers,

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am pleased to be here with you today to celebrate together the 230th Anniversary of the American Diplomacy and the founding of the United States Department of State.

On this special occasion, we also honor the continuing friendship and cooperation between the Republic of North Macedonia and the United States of America.

It is a great honor for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to contribute to the celebration and together with the US Embassy, to have the opportunity to unveil an exhibition of photographs which witness a long-standing cooperation between two friendly countries and their institutions.

The diplomatic relations between our countries over the past years have always been warm and friendly, based on shared values and strategic partnership. The exhibited photographs around us are still, yet vibrant images of a very dynamic past, filled with important events as proof of a strongly established friendship and cooperation. Many of them bring back personal emotions and memories of working with outstanding American diplomats throughout my own career.

There were times when our friends and colleagues form the State Department played a crucial role in assisting us in overcoming obstacles on our path to building a stronger country and society.  We are thankful to the United States for standing by our side throughout all these years.

Dear Ambassador,

I would also like to thank you for the crucial support from the United States in achieving our strategic goals for full membership in NATO and the European Union. Please let me take this opportunity to quote the former Secretary of State, the Honorable Henry Kissinger: “The absence of alternatives clears the mind marvelously”.

Now, this is not to say that in theory there are no alternatives, but in a situation where over 80% of the Macedonian public, our citizens are in favor of joining NATO which is more than all political parties put together. This of course means that we don’t have as political leaders an alternative to Euro-Atlantic integration.  We remain fully committed to achieving that goal and hopefully by the end of this year, we prefer for that to happen at the Summit in London in December or early next year, the Republic of North Macedonia shall officially become the 30th member of NATO. This shall be another joint contribution to the regional stability and prosperity. But it shall also be an additional impetus to strengthen our responsibility towards our citizens and another reminder that prosperity comes with democracy and the rule of law, with accountable institutions and free media.

In this respect, I would like to express our deep appreciation to the U.S. for its continuous support to date in helping our country and society. Democracy, economic growth and education are among the areas in which we witness successful implementation of the USAID technical assistance programs throughout many years.

And now, I would like to invite you, Madam Ambassador to join me in raising a glass in honor of our strong friendship and in wishing the State Department a Happy 230th Birthday.

Cheers!
